About Mayra Alvarez, AMFT
Hi, my name is Mayra Alvarez. I am a Mexican American, bilingual therapist who has been working with clients from diverse backgrounds for 4 years. While completing my masters in Marriage and Family Therapy at San Diego State, I completed my clinical training at Center for Community Counseling and Engagement located in City Heights. Here I had the opportunity of working with a diverse population of clients ranging from different cultural backgrounds and ages. Upon graduating, I continued my clinical training at a county community clinic where I had the opportunity to work with families of low socioeconomic status by helping them remove psychosocial barriers impacting their readiness for employment. Being bilingual myself, I understand the importance that language can have on expression. Therefore, I aim to help increase the accessibility of mental health services to Spanish speaking clients by eliminating the language barrier providing therapy in Spanish and English. I am trained in narrative, systems, CBT and DBT models and enjoy working with couples, families and individuals using these frameworks. I specialize in working with issues related to anxiety, depression, significant life changes, relationship problems, and identity development. With a culturally sensitive and compassionate approach, I will help guide you towards your own personal growth and goals.
I was born and raised in Oceanside, California, and grew up immersed in the Mexican culture embracing my parent’s culture and roots. I love soccer, traveling, catching sunsets, and spending time with family and friends.
